DESCRIPTION: Lot of 5 large format books, part of the fantastic photographic series published on the Old West by Time-Life in 1973. DONE ONLY THE WAY THAT TIME-LIFE COULD DO IT. Primarily loaded with photographs and a variety of other illustrations, with appropriate text. Each is a beautiful book in itself with padded covers, etc. Printed on high quality paper, with super resolution. Absolutely fantastic content on each subject in each volume. AND THERE ARE 5 VOLUMES IN THIS LOT!!!
The 5 volumes are:
1)     THE 49 ERS, a whole volume on the subject, focusing on the Gold, gold, gold rush in California, methods of transportation to get there, the rough realities of grubbing for gold, the sprouting shanty towns, boomtown on San Francisco bay, and the wondrous end of the wild quest, etc.
2)     THE LOGGERS, focusing on the treasure richer than gold, the great timber rush, taming the virgin forest, details of the perilous life, big business invading the forests, etc.
3)     THE GUNFIGHTERS, one of the really best volumes in the series, focusing on the realities of the violent side of the west, the deadly brotherhood of the gun, the men with the badges, the slow triumph of the gavel, sinister masters of murder, and frontier justice vigilante style, etc.
4)     THE MEXICAN WAR, focusing on Mexico on the eve of war, the Mexican leader, the armies of the US go westward to capture a great prize, the cost of war at home, and proud flags to rally around, etc.
5)    THE EXPRESSMEN, focusing on the continent's lengthening lifelines, wagon trains on a crucial mission, the a section on the fabled PONY EXPRESS, a stagecoach empire, the trains, coaches, and wagons, etc.
EACH VOLUME has about 245 pages (OVER 1200 PAGES TOTAL !!!), again absolutely crammed full of some of the greatest photographs taken during the time period....individuals, tintypes, dags, paintings, and outdoor shots.  Also includes many maps and pictures of relics from some of the campaigns. HUNDREDS OF GREAT ORIGINAL PHOTOS AND ILLUSTRATIONS IN THESE 5 VOLUMES!!!
These are great books on a variety of fascinating subjects. Each of the books measures 11 1/2" x 9 1/2". In excellent condition. Simply incredible content and as complete a gallery of photos and text on the subjects that I have ever seen. each is fully indexed and divided into chapters on various related subjects in each.
